A quick little novella introducing us to two sisters, Evangiline and Jade. The story plays out in little bits as we skip to a few scenes forward in time before dropping the bombshell at the end. Boom! I was pulled into the story from the beginning and can only wonder what part in the coming story they will play. Let’s find out shall we?

Looking at it after reading book 1, it gives us an interesting perspective into the people involved in that story but all it’s been really doing is making me wonder what happened between this book and the events in book 1. And even after that, we still know what they don’t know, ya know?

OK I think it’s pretty safe to say that after book 2 you’ll be safe to read this novella. Not that anything is given away so much, but rather it’ll tweak your perspective about these characters in a way that I think you’ll appreciate after reading the first two books instead of before.

I enjoyed this book. It was short so it was a really fast read. Not enough time to really get to know the characters. It’s like a little tease to see all the fun that is coming up in the next in the series. I only found one thing that confused me a little. It felt like a jump in time between the last two chapters. I finished reading the page of the next to last chapter all excited, and then turned the page and was like “WHAT!” Despite the brief confusion from that, I enjoyed this book and it held my interest and made me want to learn more about Evie and Jade.

One thing is for sure. As a human, you don’t want to be caught wandering around in Faerie territory! Alexia Purdy’s Fey world is a brutal place where even the simplest of niceties can kill you, if you’re lucky! When a seemingly normal teenager named Shade stumbles across this magical world everything changes for her as she’s thrust into a perilous quest to save it!

If you follow along with my reviews you may already know that I’m a sucker for a good origin story, and ‘the chosen one’ style is among my favorites. We’re introduced to a richly detailed world filled with various faerie races, each with their own unique flair & dangers.

Joined by a diverse group of characters, only a couple of which we experience much interaction with at least at this point in the series, Shade sets off on a journey and unfortunately for her it’s a pretty rough one that takes its toll on her. And the most telling points of the changes within herself that she experiences can be seen when she’s looking at herself in mirrors at various points in the story that made me think of this paraphrased lyrics from Wicked “Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? I have been changed for good.”

The story swept me up and carried me long with it until the very end where someone gets a sudden personality change(I won’t say who, go read it! That could have perhaps happened over the course of his separation but since we’re not privy to the details of that [yet?] it seemed out of place to me.) and then things get a little Deus ex Machina where a different solution would have been a lot more interesting to me. (Boy I hope they didn’t just use up the whole point of the quest, that would be awkward to say the least!)

Solid story, great characters, wonderfully detailed setting, not a fan of the ending, so I’m going to go with 4.5 from me!

When I first started to read this one, my first thought was “What’s going on? Where is Evie? Will we hear about Jade again?” As I am reading I finding it kind of neat that it appears to be sometime in the future from where Evangeline left off. Normally, I do not like when there are time jumps between books. Maybe knowing Evangeline came out after this one, makes it not effect me, or maybe it’s just the way it’s written. It draws you in and still I want to learn about about the characters. This one starts us off with Shade. She’s hearing voices, so as a reader you’re left thinking is she crazy? Does she have some kind of super powers? Stay intrigued and read on!

I enjoyed the way that Shade learned about herself and how the character grew.

I love how Shade and Dylan are not happy about their connection, but end up growing close. This book is a page turner, hard to put down. I love how you can easily connect to the characters. I look forward to EverFire to learn more about them and see how their relationships develop.
