🎤 Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special Review: Nostalgic… But Missing Something
As a mom whose daughter grew up watching Hannah Montana, this special hit me in a way I didn’t fully expect. It brought back memories—not just of the show, but of those moments sitting together, watching, laughing, and singing along. So going into the 20th anniversary special, I was really hoping to feel that magic again.
And in some ways, I did.
There were moments that were funny, touching, and genuinely warm. Seeing Billy Ray Cyrus again brought back that familiar comfort—like stepping into a piece of the past. It was also so fun watching my daughter light up seeing his “Achy Breaky Heart” video—excitedly shouting, “That’s Miley’s dad!” while singing and dancing along. That moment alone felt really special. But at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed that he wasn’t there throughout more of the special. For someone so central to the heart of the show, his presence felt too brief.
What made it harder to fully connect, though, was the absence of most of the original cast. That’s really where the emotional weight should have been. I completely understand why Emily Osment couldn’t be there—she shared that she was busy filming Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and life happens. But without those familiar faces, it felt like something important was missing… like trying to relive a memory without everyone who made it special.
Then there were some of the guest appearances. Seeing Selena Gomez was unexpected, but it didn’t quite land emotionally. Instead of adding to the nostalgia, moments like that felt a little out of place—like they belonged to a different story.
The running bit with the closet was fun at first. It definitely nodded to one of the show’s most iconic elements. But as it kept coming back, it started to lose its charm and feel a bit overdone.
But one place the special truly shined was in the music. Miley Cyrus brought so much emotion and power to her performances. You could feel the growth, the history, and the connection to the past all at once. Those moments felt real—and honestly, they were the ones that stuck with me the most.
Final Thoughts
This wasn’t a bad special—not at all. It had heart. It had moments that reminded me why Hannah Montana meant so much in the first place. But it also left me wishing for more… more connection, more familiar faces, more of that feeling that once brought us all together.
Maybe that’s the hardest part about revisiting something so tied to a specific time in life—you realize it’s not just about the show. It’s about who you shared it with.
And that’s something a special can’t fully recreate.
This is the remaining poster leftover in my daughter’s room. She’s out on her own now. She used to have more hanging in her room including the one we got when we saw a pre screening of the Hannah Montana movie. Watching this special brought up so many memories with my kiddo.
