SYNOPSIS

When nursing student Jane graduated a semester early and returned home for Christmas break she expected to spend the time visiting her depressed mother, who developed a nasty drug habit after the death of Jane’s father. Jane was instead greeted by her mother being held at gunpoint by her drug dealer “Big Daddy.” In a desperate attempt to save her mother’s life, Jane agrees to work off her mother’s debt as one of Big Daddy’s “entertainers.”

In an instant, Big Daddy has taken everything from Jane including her family, her name and her freedom. As Jane adjusts to her new life as Tatiana, the sex worker, she desperately attempts to hold on to her identity, dignity and any semblance of safety or normalcy. She struggles to navigate the dynamics of living and working with the other girls and how best to cope with servicing the club patrons. Will Jane survive and continue to recognize the woman she sees in the mirror each day?

“Gustav, how can we help you?” Candy asked.

“I just wanted to see how our newest girl was doing. It looks like you were getting ready for bed, by all means please continue,” he said. He eyed me up and down.

Candy grabbed his chin to force him to look at her, “Thank you for escorting Stella and Bella back here, but it’s getting late and we all have early morning dance and exercise regimes we need to get to.”

“Oh I’m going I just want to get a good look at this one first. Plus Big Daddy wanted me to tell her something.”

Gustav de-tangled Candy from his grasp and he moved towards me. I braced myself for being kicked again. Instead I felt a hand move to my waist. My heart raced. I looked up at him as he pushed my shirt up from my waist to reveal the bruise.

“He told me that I should apologize for injuring you. I didn’t think I kicked you that hard. I was out of line,” said Gustav. I tried to lean back from him. His eyes were dull and his fingers were warm. He pushed his hand into my bruise. I flinched. His apology was as empty as his eyes.

“Spoken like a true sociopath…” I muttered.

“Alright Gustav leave her alone. You came, you delivered Big Daddy’s message and you know how he feels about you getting too touchy feely with the dancers,” said Candy.

He grinned at me and moved his hands off my body. He held them up in the air over his head and said, “Alright—alright I’m going.”

Gustav turned and left the dormitory and locked the triple dead bolt behind him.

Stella and Bella walked over to me. “So you’re the new girl. I heard you stirred up quite a ruckus around here,” said the girl with short blond hair.

“Hi I’m Tatiana.”

“I’m Belladonna, but everyone calls me Bella, especially when they want to pair me up with Stella over here as some kind of lesbo/sister act,” said the red head with shoulder length hair.

Stella held the open bottle of vodka in her hand. Only about a third of the original fluid was left.

Candy grabbed the bottle from Stella’s hand and took a swig. She handed the bottle off to me next.

“Take a long hard drink honey it will help you get to sleep a little faster,” said Candy.

I looked down at the bottle. It was clear and the glass still cool with condensation. I placed the bottle to my lips and tipped it back. The fluid burned going down my throat. I took another two swigs before handing the bottle off to Bella.

“Cheers,” she said. She raised the bottle and drank the last of the fluid.

I turned to the vanity and grabbed a hair tie from the packet on the desk. I started to wind my long hair into a braid and I followed Bella, Stella and Candy down the corridor. They showed me to the bedroom and Candy pulled out a couple of extra blankets for me, while I went to the bathroom. Thankfully there were unopened packs of toothbrushes in the drawer. I stared into the mirror in front of me as I brushed vigorously.

“Good-bye Jane Rhodes,” I said after spitting the mix of water, toothpaste and saliva into the basin.

I let the sound of my birth name ring in my ears a few seconds longer before I turned out the light and turned away from the mirror.
