This weeks featured author is William Massa. The Author of Fear the Light, Gargoyle Knight and Silicon Man.
Why did you decide to become a writer?
I guess I loved movies, book s and comic books growing up and was just drawn to making up stories. They provided an escape into fantastic worlds and soon enough I was trying to tell my own stories
Who/what are your writing inspirations?
Robert McCammon, Stephen King, Dean Koontz but also a ton of amazing screenwriters.
What are your favorite genres to read?
Horror, thrillers and I also enjoy science fiction and dark fantasy.
What do you hope readers take away most from your writing?
I want them to enjoy the book, be entertained and hopefully enjoy a brief escape from their everyday reality.
Who’s the favorite character of yours that you’ve written and why?
My favorite changes with each book. I think that I seem to be drawn to a lot our characters that are trapped between two worlds, be they vampires, androids or gargoyles. I was an American who grew up in Europe so for many of my formative years I felt like I was between two worlds – maybe I’m still processing that in my fiction,
What is your writing style? Outliner/Planner or Seat of the Pantser?
My background is screenwriting so definitely a planner. I don’t know how one can write a script or novel without a plan but King seems to do a pretty good job at it. If you’re a genius, seat of your pants is a good idea but for the rest of us mortals planning seems to be the way to go.
If someone wanted to become a writer, what tips would you give to them?
Read, read and READ. It’s that simple. And watch movies. Fully immerse yourself in the medium. For most writers this happens pretty organically. The next step is write. And write some more. Writing is both an art and a craft and like any other skill, there is a learning curve. The more you do it, the better you’ll get at it. Know that the first few attempts may not be brilliant but just keep doing it. And caffeine and alcohol help too 😉
